Don’t idolize individuals, especially those who seek to gain power.
Musk buying twitter is essentially the same thing as Trump becoming president in 2016. An "outsider" comes in to clean the “swamp” of corrupt individuals. A Batman like figure that can clean the swamp while not falling prey to the exact same toxic poisons that started the problem in the first place.
Somehow republicans were convinced that Trump would come in and fix D.C. Trump has the following characteristics:
1. Friends with many of the swamp creatures (Clintons)
2. Given money to, and supported both main parties when it suited him best
3. Old money Billionaire who made "deals" at the highest levels of society
4. A well documented history of lying, and not treating people with respect
5. An enormous ego that seeks power
Why is he the right person to clean the swamp? Spoiler: he wasn’t
Now consider Elon. In media/information we’ve got a few insanely rich/powerful individuals that are taking control of information. In enters Musk with the following characteristics:
1. The richest man on the planet
2. Potentially the most powerful person on the planet.
3. An enormous ego that seeks power
Do people actually expect this to work?
Musk and Trump are not benevolent dictators. They are egomaniacs that smartly figured out the way to operate/gain followers in todays world is to be a troll. They are both excellent at being trolls, see below were I highlighted their playbook:
What do people think the issue with Twitter is? and why do they think Musk can solve it? This is not some binary decision of free speech vs. censorship.
Left unmoderated platforms devolve into 90% trolls, spam, and porn. If you dont believe me, you likely have only ever viewed moderated content on the internet. The other end is 100% curated top down content. Neither of these platforms would attract consumers.
What do people think they want from Twitter? the current platform, but no account banning? Bring back Trump and Alex Jones?
What evidence is there that musk will make it better? What skillset does he have that make him a good candidate?
The truth is that social media is not easy to fix. In my opinion the solution is more decentralization, and giving individuals transparency and insight as to the information they are receiving and the algorithms being used to give them that information. I highly doubt Musk taking Twitter private will accomplish this, but I will hope I am proven wrong.
